Spain in Europe

Spain’s European Policy

From its very beginning, the Observatori has analysed Spain’s European policies. Since 1990 and on an annual basis, a chapter on Spain and its European policy has been published in the Jahrbuch der Europäischen Integration, edited by Werner Weidenfeld and Wolfgang Wessels. You can download all these texts in Spanish here. The study, dating from the 1990s, can be found in La política europea de España (Ariel), which can be downloaded as a manuscript below.

Spain in Europe

The Observatori has published two special monographs on the strategy of Spain in the field of International Relations and its relationship with the European institutions during the years 1996-2004 and 2004-2008 (texts in Spanish and English). Both documents are based on the assumption of the Europeanization of the international activity of Spain and examine from this perspective the premierships of José María Aznar and José Luís Rodríguez Zapatero respectively.

Analysis on the Spanish presidencies of the EU

Spain presided over the Council of the European Union twice in the first decade of the 21st century. The second presidency was completely different from the first, as it included the new member countries resulting from the EU’s expansion to the East and was also one of the first presidencies to implement the new Treaty of Lisbon. The two publications discuss the interaction between Spain’s foreign policy and the external action of the European Union throughout these periods.
