About this project:
The primary aim of the EU-PERFORM research team was to study the performance of the European Union in international institutions. In particular, the study sought to ascertain to what extent the European Union acted effectively in them. Performance was defined from two points of view: internally, as the ability of the EU to coordinate and adopt common positions in international institutions, and externally, as the EU’s ability to influence institutional policies to make them fall in line with the EU’s objectives.
Robert Kissack (IBEI) participated in the project with the analysis of the role of the EU in the International Labour Organization (ILO). EU-PERFORM was funded by the European Science Foundation and led by Knud Erik Jørgensen (Aarhus), Sebastian Oberthür and Jamal Shahin (Vrije Brussel). Its outcomes include the publication of a Special Issue of the Journal of European Integration (2011), to which Kissack contributed with the article ‘The Performance of the European Union in the International Labour Organization’. In addition to this, the research team edited the volume The Performance of the EU in International Institutions (Routledge 2013). Mention must also be made of other publications by Robert Kissack: ‘Man Overboard! Was EU Influence over the MLC lost at sea?‘ (Special Issue in the Journal of European Public Policy 2015) and his chapter ‘Labour Standards. An Historical Account of the EU Involvement with(in) the ILO’ in the book The European Union with(in) international organisations: continuity, commitment and consistency, edited by Amandine Orsini (Ashgate 2014).
