Observatori researcher Eduard Soler i Lecha (UAB) and Inés Arco (CIDOB) have published an article in the Journal of North African Studies, titled ‘The Western Sahara conflict in a post-hegemonic world: interests, values and foreign policy strategies‘, examining the impact of power dispersion at both global and regional levels on the Western Sahara conflict. The article focuses on two non-Western global powers (China and Russia) and two rising regional powers (Turkey and the United Arab Emirates). It analyses the motivations behind and the impact of their policies toward the conflict, placing them in relation to the actions of other actors such as the EU, the United States, France and Spain. The authors find that the growing relevance of these emerging powers is also driven by a proactive strategy on the part of primary actors to diversify alliances and encourage these power centers to align their positions as closely as possible with their own priorities.
