Observatori researchers Dominique Schmid and Martijn Vlaskamp published their article, “Public Preferences for Environmental Peacebuilding: The Case of Forest Conservation Projects in Colombia“, in Environment and Security. The study explores, through a conjoint experiment in Colombia, what characteristics of forest conservation projects influence public support. The most significant impact was observed with provisions for job creation and public investments that targeted the entire population. More peacebuilding-specific provisions, related to the reintegration of ex-combatants and dialogue between victims and ex-combatants, also resonated positively with respondents. Based on these findings, the authors conclude that including environmental peacebuilding features in forest conservation projects can increase public support for them in post-conflict countries.
