The Observatori researcher Eduard Soler (UAB) was invited to the podcast of the magazine 5W, hosted by journalists Raül Flores and Núria Jar, to provide his analysis of the recent attacks by the Houthis in Yemen on ships crossing the Red Sea.
Soler offered a brief history of the Houthi movement in Yemen and the war between this Shiite group, supported by Iran, against the Sunni central government, backed by Saudi Arabia.
He explained that, although these attacks in the Red Sea appear to be carried out in solidarity with Palestine, as anti-Israel sentiment is part of the Houthi political identity, they are actually designed primarily to capture the attention of global actors.
In this way, despite the international community’s collective amnesia about this conflict, the Houthis manage to place Yemen at the top of the international agenda.
