Elisabeth Johansson-Nogués (IBEI) has published in Mediterranean Politics a new paper this June titled “The New EU–Arab League Dialogue: The Contours of a Cooperation”. The author analyzes the relations between the European Union and the League of Arab States that have taken a new impetus in recent years. During the Arab Spring high level meetings have been intensified since a new meeting structure was adopted in 2012. The paper outlines the main traits of the new dialogue, noticing that it allows the EU to overcome some of the shortcoming of other frameworks of cooperation between it and Arab countries.

Johansson-Nogués concludes in her paper that the new EU-Arab dialogue is different from other previous frameworks of cooperation. Regarding the Euro-Arab Dialogue of the 1970s, the new relations have larger scope beyond economic issues. Moreover, it also finds differences compared to the Union for the Mediterranean partnership, as it encompasses different partners, it has a greater sense of co-ownership and political dialogue on security has been intensified.
